  Commissioning

Jonathan creates fine museum quality reproduction furniture and
restores antique pieces to their original state. The creation process
begins by collaberating with the client to determine a design that
incorporates the period, style, function, and needs that the client
wishes for their custom piece. Once these items are decided, a
working drawing is created and presented for approval.
Once the approval is given, the client is presented with a proprosal.
If this is agreeable, the client signs the proposal and provides a deposit.

The creation process begins.

First the wood is selected based on color and grain orientation.
Different grain patterns determine the overall result of the piece.

Once the wood is selected, the milling process begins. Patterns
are made from the working drawings and transferred to wood for
shaping by hand. All of Jonathan's pieces are assembled using
traditional joinery techniques, such as dovetails, mortise and tenon,
half lap, or splines. All joints are fitted by hand to ensure the ultimate
integrity of the piece.

Finally the piece is ready for its finish. Finish choices consist of
French polish, lacquer, or hand rubbed oil. Lacquers can be rubbed
to various degrees, from satin to high polish, depending on the
client's choice.
